Concerning this specific diary, I did find the characterization very bland. But the details and the events of the story seemed to make up for it well enough to keep it at four stars, because after all, I did pick this up for the historical aspects, and not the characters.
This oversized book was a study of Egyptian life in the first century B.C., a biography of Cleopatra, and a story about a young handmaiden, Nefret. The details of life then were fascinating. I must admit, I was surprised to see how graphic a few of the illustrations were; for example, the murdered Julius Caesar lies bloody while a senator knees nearby and throws up; a woman throws a slop jar that is clearly filled with pee and turds out of a window (did they really do that in Egypt??).
It also had the same familiar feel as the Dear America books do, so all in all I am glad that such a book - such a series! - exists, to help kids read about and learn about much more cultural diversity and different historical figures than they may known of otherwise.
I remember check here this being one of my favorite Royal Diaries books when I was younger. It could very well have been the favorite, but I can’t remember that far back. I think what really got to me were the sumptuous descriptions of palace life in Egypt and how luxurious it sounded.
